Hey there! Are you looking for the best Lactobacillus probiotic supplements to improve your gut health? Well, you’re in the right place! We’ve put together a list of our top 5 picks for 2023 and a handy buyer’s guide to help you make an informed decision.

What are Lactobacillus Probiotic Supplements?

First things first, let’s talk about what Lactobacillus probiotics are. Basically, they’re friendly bacteria that live in your gut and help to keep things running smoothly. They break down food and fight off harmful bacteria, while also boosting your immune system.

When choosing a Lactobacillus probiotic supplement, there are a few things to keep in mind. Look for one with a high-quality strain of Lactobacillus bacteria, as well as other helpful strains like Bifidobacterium or Gasseri.

It’s also important to check the potency – aim for at least 10 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) per dose. And of course, pick a form that you find easy to take regularly, whether that’s capsules, tablets, powders, or gummies.

Provitalize
By far and away the highest-rated Lactobacillus probiotic on the market, with over 13k 5* Amazon reviews.
    • Price: $49
  • Best For: Contains 68.2 Billion CFUs For Maximum Positive Impact On Gut Health
  • Best For: Reducing Gas & Bloating
  • Best For: Managing Weight Gain
  • Provitalize from Better Body Co. tops our list for best Lactobacillus probiotic supplement, and with good reason.

Containing a staggering 68.2 Billion CFUs, Provitalize is the do-it-all probiotic that maximizes positive impact on gut health.

    What’s In The Bottle?

Every serving of Provitalize formula provides 68.2 billion CFU which is comprised of Lactobacillus Gasseri, Bifidobacterium Breve, and Bifidobacterium Lactis. Additionally, the formula contains turmeric root extract and moringa leaf.

Bifidobacterium Breve is found naturally in our digestive tract. Studies have shown that B. Breve “activates” genes that impact fat metabolism and supports blood sugar levels.. Bifidobacterium Lactis is present in raw milk and has also been shown to promote better digestion, manage inflammatory responses, and importantly for women over 40, cholesterol levels.

Lactobacillus Gasseri boosts immunity, helps with allergies, and reduces the accumulation of belly fat. It has also been scientifically-proven to be an effective weight loss ingredient. A clinical trial published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that this probiotic strain caused an average 4.6% body fat loss over the course of 12 weeks.

What’s more, Lactobacillus Gasseri can be especially effective for women over 40. A clinical study published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology in 2019 examined the effects of a probiotic supplement containing L. Gasseri and other probiotic strains on gut microbiota and menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women. The study found that the probiotic supplement was associated with significant improvements in not only hot flashes, but also mood, and quality of life compared to the control group.

    Product Claims vs. Our Verdict

But what does all the science mean for you? Having tested the product over a number of weeks, we dug deeper into some of the key product claims.

Claim: Manages Bloating & Improves Digestion

Verdict: True. After the first week, we experienced a little bloating for a few days, although having read up on other reviews this could be due to product doing what it does in repairing the gut. From the second week onwards, bloating was significantly diminished, leading to a flatter-looking tummy, pre and post meals.

    Claim: Supports Healthier Weight

Verdict: True. Having taken the product for little over 4 weeks, I am pleased to report that I’ve lost around 9lbs through a combination of exercise, a calorie-controlled diet, and taking Provitalize twice a day. Yes, it still requires work. But so far, this has proven to be more effective than a bunch of fat burning supplements that promise much, but ultimately deliver little.

Claim: Supports Better Sleep At Night

Verdict: Sort Of. With high levels of Tryptophan and Zinc found in Moringa Leaf Extract, Provitalize claims to help women regulate serotonin and melatonin levels while managing insomnia. Using a sleep tracker, I did notice a slight increase in deep sleep duration, however no other discernible difference in sleep efficiency. Although generally, I did have more energy in the morning, so this claim could be true, we just don’t have the underlying sleep tracking metrics to verify.

    The Verdict

Provitalize is our number one choice when it comes to Lactobacillus supplements, thanks to several factors including the highest CFU count, results experienced, and its 100% natural, no-filler formulation.

Based on public reviews, customers have reported visible improvements in belly fat reduction, weight loss, fewer and less intense hot flashes and night sweats, better sleep, more energy, and better joint health.

When we tried the product ourselves, we also experienced a noticeable increase in energy, together with weight loss and a reduction in bloatedness.

Provitalize contains 350mg of curcumin per serving and clinically studied probiotic strains of L. Gasseri, B. Breve, and B. Lactis. It is difficult to find another product that contains this combination of natural ingredients.

With all that, Provitalize takes top-spot on our list.

    Culturelle Digestive Daily Probiotic
A popular probiotic, best for those who are sensitive to dairy.
      • Price: $24
  • Best For: Lactose Intolerance
  • Not So Great: Only 10 Billion CFUs Per Serving
  • Culturelle Daily Probiotic is a popular supplement that helps keep your tummy and immune system in good shape! Each capsule has 10 billion CFUs of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, which is a type of friendly bacteria that’s good for your gut and immune health. The probiotics are protected by a special delivery system, so they survive your stomach acid and get to work where they’re needed most.

Culturelle Daily Probiotic is free from gluten and animal products, so it’s a good choice if you’re a vegetarian or have lactose intolerance. It doesn’t have any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives either. You just take one capsule a day, and you’re good to go!

Regular use of Culturelle Daily Probiotic can help with occasional bloating, gas, and other tummy troubles. However, with a relatively modest amount of CFUs, there are certainly more powerful options on this list.

As I mentioned above, the brand is popular with both men and women, and boasts some 13k 5* Amazon reviews – putting it on par with Provitalize for social proof!

    Ritual Synbiotic+
Uses a delayed-release capsule to help probiotics reach the colon.
      • Price: $54
  • Good For: All-In-One Gut Health
  • Not So Great: Only 11 Billion CFUs
  • Not So Great: Less Than 500 Amazon Reviews
  • Ritual Synbiotic+ is a prebiotic / probiotic / postbiotic combination that contains two probiotic strains, BB-12 (Bifidobacterium Lactis) and LGG (Lactobacillus Rhamnosus). Containing 11 Billion CFUs, we ranked it third as the product seems to be well-formulated and includes prebiotic at the same time.

Apart from bloating, Ritual Synbiotic+ also helps to support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, gut barrier function, and immune health. It also uses a unique delayed-release capsule designed to help reach the colon (not the stomach), which is an ideal place for probiotics to survive and grow.

People who take Ritual Synbiotic+ say that it helps with digestion, and some even say they have more energy and feel better overall. But like any supplement, there is a chance you might experience some mild side effects, like bloating or diarrhea.

    Menofit Complete Probiotic
A 28-ingredient formulation including probiotics, herbs, vitamins, and minerals.
      • Price: $49
  • Best For: All-Natural Prebiotic & Probiotic Combination
  • Over 2k 5* Amazon Reviews
  • Not So Great: Only 25 Billion CFUs
  • We listed Menofit fourth because while it contains only 25 billion CFU of clinically studied probiotics, it also contains prebiotics. Additionally, vitamins and herbs in the Menofit formula have been shown to increase energy, reduce food cravings, and alleviate menstrual cramps.

However, some of the ingredients fall under the category of “traditional medicine,” and rely on historical, anecdotal evidence rather than clinical studies.

    ProbioSlim
A great value option, with 30 Billion CFUs.
      • Price: $19
  • Best For: A High Volume Of CFUs At A Low Price-Point
  • ProbioSlim is a well known ForceFactor brand available online and through national retailers Walmart, Target, and GNC. ProbioSlim Extra Strength contains a proprietary probiotic blend of 30 billion CFU.

It contains the well studied trademarked probiotic LactoSpore® together with the 7 strains trademarked “digestive superblend” LS9485™ and prebiotics inulin, fig, and papaya extracts. ProbioSlim Extra Strength takes our fifth position because, while it is a good value, much of the thermogenic action of ProbioSlim comes from the 100mg of caffeine in the green tea extract – not so great if you don’t like jitters with your daily probiotic.

It’s important to note that like any supplement, there is a risk of side effects with ProbioSlim. Some users have reported mild digestive discomfort or headaches, but these side effects are usually short-lived and go away on their own.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What Are The Benefits Of Lactobacillus Probiotic Supplements For Women Over 40?

As women age, their bodies go through some changes that can affect their gut and immune health. But don’t worry, taking Lactobacillus probiotic supplements can help with that! Here are some of the top benefits for women over 40:

    Happy Tummy

Lactobacillus probiotics can help restore balance to the gut and reduce common digestive issues like bloating, gas, and constipation. This is especially important for women over 40, as poor digestive health can impact overall wellbeing and quality of life.

    Strong Immune System

As we age, our immune system gets weaker, and women over 40 are more at risk of getting sick. Lactobacillus probiotics can help to strengthen the immune system by promoting the growth of good bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria in the gut. This means less chance of getting sick and a stronger body.

    Bye-Bye UTIs

Women over 40 are more likely to get urinary tract infections (UTIs), but Lactobacillus probiotics can help reduce the risk of getting one by keeping the urinary tract healthy.

    Strong Bones

As we get older, we become more prone to bone-related issues like osteoporosis. Lactobacillus probiotics can help increase calcium absorption, which leads to better bone density and reduces the risk of fractures.

    Happy Heart

Women over 40 are at higher risk of heart disease, but Lactobacillus probiotics can help lower cholesterol levels and reduce inflammation, which is good for the heart.

So, taking Lactobacillus probiotic supplements can help women over 40 stay healthy and vibrant as they age. It’s an easy and effective way to support overall health and wellbeing.

Choosing The Right Lactobacillus Probiotic Supplement For Your Needs

Okay, so you’re ready to start taking Lactobacillus probiotic supplements, but how do you choose the right one? Here are some things to keep in mind:

    • Look for strains that have been proven to work, like Lactobacillus gasseri or Lactobacillus rhamnosus.
    • Check the label for the number of colony-forming units (CFUs). You’ll want at least 10 billion per serving, but you might need more depending on your needs.
    • Choose a form that you like, whether that’s capsules, tablets, powders, or gummies. And check if the supplement needs to be kept in the fridge.
    • Look for a brand that uses high-quality ingredients and follows good manufacturing practices (GMP). And remember that the cheapest option might not be the best one.

And hey, everyone’s different, so what works for your friend might not work for you. It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplement, especially if you have any health issues or take any medications.
